August 2010 Visit to the Computer History Museum

In August 2010 I finally had my chance to visit the Computer History Museum.

Their collection is enormous. It ranges from the UNIVAC to the DEC mini-computers to the XEROX Alto, the original IBM PC (my first computer) and the original "homebrew" Google servers.

Unfortunately, during my visit the museum was largely closed due to to renovations. So, my trip was a 3-star trip. The guide was knowledgeable and engaging, but the tour was extremely restricted. I'm sure that when they finish construction in 2011 it will be a 5-star experience.

If you are planning a trip before the Summer of 2011, here is what you will get to see:

The Xerox Alto, the Apple I in the wood box signed by "Woz", the Babbage machine being demonstrated (at certain times), an early Cray Supercomputer, and a few other artifacts.

But, if you can help it, plan your trip for AFTER their renovations are complete Summer of 2011. I could tell by looking past the construction tape that it is going to be awesome when it is done. I would like to visit again to see what I missed.
