My visit to the Computer History Museum

11/16/2010 6:48 AM

I've wanted to see the computer History Museum for a long time. This summer I had my chance to go!

I was so excited to see some of the early machines that I've read so much about. From the UNIVAC to the DEC mini-computers to the XEROX Alto and the original IBM PC (my first computer) Also, they have the original Google servers, and so much more. A lot on the museum is posted in videos on YouTube.

I went online and found out that, due to renovations, they are only open a few hours on weekends. Most exhibits are closed. I was bummed, but I wasn't going to miss my chance to be there.

It ended up being very cool, but sadly only a very, very small part of the museum was open. I didn't get to see much of what I had hoped to see. Big bummer for me. I would still recommend it, but don't go out of your way until AFTER their renovations are complete Summer of 2011.

Of the things I *did* get to see are the Xerox Alto, the Apple I in the wood box signed by "Woz", the Babbage machine being demonstrated, and an early Cray Supercomputer.

From the outside, the Museum is HUGE. I could tell by looking past the construction tape that it is going to be awesome when it is done. I hope to be there again in my lifetime.

I don't know, it seems like it's appropriate here, too! Why not leave it?
